University of Nebraska Wide Receiver Training Workouts
A bit older VHS video presentation from famous Nebraska’s NCAA assistant coach Ron Brown. Today he is a director of player development, but he spent most of his time as a wide receiver coach. His players have just the words of praise for him and he is notorious for producing strong, committed wide receivers.
In this video, you will find different bits of advice about how the wide receivers should play if they want to be successful. From the most basic things, like keeping your eyes always on the ball and going towards the ball and not from it, coach Brown is giving you a detailed plan of training for becoming the best wide receiver you can possibly be. He also explains his weekly schedule of training, with day-to-day practices and different levels of practice toughness you need.
His coaching technique is based on the “15,000 club” practice. This means that during the offseason you should have each day 300 complete passes, 5 days a week, 10 weeks, making that 15.000 completed passes in 3 months. This is going to allow your muscle memory to learn to do all the right moves automatically, without your brain having to think about several different things at once while running at full speed. The main thing about these drills is that anyone can help you with them. It doesn’t have to be a professional coach – it can be your mom or anyone capable of just throwing the ball in your general direction. The whole point of these drills is in you learning how to catch the less-than-perfect balls – which is the majority of the balls that will be thrown at you in the game-time situations.
A big emphasis in this video is on the perimeter blocking. Wide receivers can do a lot for their team just with perimeter blocking when the running plays are in action. And who better to teach you that than the coach of one of the best running teams in the last 30 years?
Coach Brown’s video is a great tape for any wide receiver looking to tighten up his game and learn from the best. In it you will find both great theoretical lessons and a huge amount of drills footage as well, enabling you to use everything you have learned in practice as well. Even though the video is a bit lengthy for today's standard it’s worth every minute spent to watch it.
